ISIS Salute to Veterans Bowl: Troy vs. Jacksonville State

Okay, first of all, before you get your panties all up in a wad, the woman above is not disrespecting the troops. She's disrespecting the Commander in Chief, who's made a career out of disrespecting the troops. I can't think of an action that's more patriotic and respectful to our troops than flipping the bird to the man who holds our brave veterans in such contempt.

Our Commander in Chief dodged the draft during the Vietnam War because his wealthy family could afford a doctor to grant him a deferment for "bone spurs." The family of that doctor said he probably made up the diagnosis as a favor to the man's father.

Back in January 2016, the Stable Genius attended a "fundraiser" for veterans that raised roughly $5 million in donations, and even pledged another $1 million of his own money. However,  investigative reporters later revealed that  he hadn't donated the funds. He only sent the money to charity months later after the scam was made public and was fined $2 million by a judge for deceptive practices over the event.

He doesn't understand, and never will, how a person can be true to an ideal for which he does not receive monetary reward. On Memorial Day 2017, while standing in front of the grave of 1st Lt. Robert Kelly, who died in Afghanistan in 2010, he turned to Gen. John Kelly, the soldier's father, and said, "I don't get it. What was in it for them?" He was similarly mystified why U.S. flags should be lowered to half-staff after Sen. John McCain died, saying the "guy was a fucking loser."

He not only mocked Senator and former POW John McCain for being captured, he also mocked Gold Star families before and after his first 2016 presidential campaign. During his time in office, he didn't want to be seen with veteran amputees, because "it doesn't look good for me." He didn't want to have disabled veterans participate in patriotic parades because "nobody wants to see that."

In 2018, the Stable Genius canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris. Although he claimed his helicopter couldn't fly in the rain and the Secret Service couldn't drive him there, it was reported that the real reason was he was more interested in keeping his ridiculous hair dry. He asked his staff, "Why should I go to that cemetery? It's filled with losers." During that same trip, he also told his staff that the 2,000 U.S. Marines who were killed at the World War I Battle of Belleau Wood were "suckers" for getting killed.

He recently stated that certain high-ranking military members, with decades of service to our country, should be executed for treason because they disagreed with his political positions. He's cut veterans' benefits and substantially defunded the Veterans Administration. No, that man does not love or respect our troops, and our "Salute to Veterans" here at SDW is a raised middle finger to the so-called Stable Genius.

But anyway, football. This bowl, which used to be called the Camellia Bowl, has been played since 2014 at the Cramton Bowl stadium in lovely Montgomery, Alabama. It was variously been called the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl and the TaxAct Camellia Bowl for its sponsors, but this year the name was changed for some reason to the Salute to Veterans Bowl and is sponsored by the government and military contractor, Integrated Solutions for Systems, Inc. (ISIS).

I don't understand the name change or why we need another bowl named for the military. Not only do we have Memorial Day and Veterans Day and Armed Forces Day to commemorate our troops, we also have the annual Army-Navy football game, as well as the Military Bowl and the Armed Forces Bowl. But another bowl honoring our underfunded, much-maligned, and often overlooked veterans? Sure, why not?

The game will pit the unranked Jacksonville State Gamecocks (8-5) of Conference USA against the unranked Troy Trojans (8-5) of the Sun Belt Conference, and are you kidding me with those team names? Trojans vs. the Cocks? The jokes literally just write themselves. Will the Trojans cover the Cocks, or will the Cocks break through the Trojan defense? They had to have done this on purpose - it can't be a coincidence - and whoever said military-industrial contractors don't have a sense of humor?

Troy cornerback Kaleno Levine has opted out of the game, and three starters (RB Tae Meadows, OG Patrick Bowling, and DE DJ Jackson) have entered the transfer portal and will not play. Troy QB Goose Crowder left the Sun Belt Championship game against James Madison with an injury and has been seen on crutches, but he is expected to play tonight after practicing in full this week. The Troy offensive line, however, is in rough shape.

Overall, Jacksonville State is in better shape. RT Reggie Jackson has entered the portal and will not play. LG Adrian Gumm and CB Tyrin Taylor missed the CUSA Championship game against Kennesaw State with injuries, and DT Jawaun Campbell hasn't played since Week 11.

Despite having more injuries, I randomly picked Troy as a 3½-point favorite because I know nothing about these teams. I'm a perfect 1-0 on my picks so far this season, so I'm relying on those Trojans to protect my unblemished record and to maintain my virtue.

The game kicks off at 9:00 pm Eastern on ESPN.
