Day 3 of the Yeva's voyage around the Arctic Ocean was rough today. After days of tedious, slow, windless drifting, there was wind today and lots of it.
"35-40 knots, but the wind's not the issue, it's the sea state," pilot Ella Hibbert said. "Massive waves, breaking crests and spray."
She had to turn the Yeva north to take the waves on the stern as it was getting too dangerous to sail with them coming over the beam. "Having the weight of the Norwegian Sea dumped on me in the cockpit was pretty miserable," Hibbert said. "The cockpit literally filled like a bathtub with me in it." However, despite the challenges, the Yeva is apparently taking the weather in stride.
The wind, and the swell with it, is due to drop off around midnight tonight. But before she can enjoy rolling downwind in 15 knots of breeze, Hibbert will have to beat into a north-westerly as she approaches Iceland.
