First Everest Summit of 2025

The first summit of Mount Everest occurred today by the rope-fixing team assigned by the China-Tibet Mountaineering Association. The weather was reportedly beautiful but windy, and additional wind is forecast to begin tomorrow and continue until May 16 and may impede commercial climbers trying to summit this week.

American climber Tyler Andrews was attempting to set a record for the fastest no-oxygen ascent on Everest and could have been the first climber to reach the top of the mountain this year. He had left Base Camp around 9:15 pm and was quick in the Icefall and even faster as he crossed the Western Cwm, the Valley of Silence, and the first part of the Lhotse Wall. But his pace decreased as he climbed the Lhotse Face to Camp 3 where, for reasons unknown, he turned around and aborted his climb.
