BU Shuts Out Providence, 3-0

 

In this, the second game of a home-and-away weekend series with Providence, the No. 9-ranked, Beanpot champion BU men's hockey team bounced back from last night's loss and shut out the No. 7 Friars, 3-0. Jack Harvey, Sascha Boumedienne, and Quinn Hutson all scored for the Terriers, and Mikhail Yegorov was perfect in the net with 30 saves.

BU is 11-7-1 in conference play (17-11-1 overall), third in Hockey East and six points back from BC (three behind Maine). They have five games left to the regular season, starting next weekend with a home-and-away versus the Northeastern Huskies (10-15-3). 

BU Terriers 2, New Hampshire Wildcats 2 (2 OT)

 

The women of BU have to settle for a tie in the home game of their weekend home-and-away series against New Hampshire. Tamara Giaquinto got both of the Terriers' goals on two even-strength plays, but UNH tied it up and neither team was able to score in OT.

The Terriers will end their regular season next weekend with a home-and-away series against the UConn Huskies.  They didn't get any Hockey East points for today's tie but fortunately for them, UConn got swept by Providence this weekend and BU keeps a first-place lead in the conference by five points going into the final series.

BU Men Lose in Providence, 6-3

 

The No. 9-ranked Beanpot Champion Boston University Terriers kicked off their weekend home-and-away series by losing to No. 7 Providence, 6-3. Ryan Green got a power-play goal in the Second, and Devin Kaplan scored a pair of goals in the Third - one on a power play and one short-handed. But Providence scored more and won the game. 

BU (16-11-1 overall, 10-7-1 in Hockey East) remain in third place in the Hockey East standings, six points back from BC. 

The Terriers return home tomorrow to play the Friars in Game Two of this series.     

BU Women Beat New Hampshire, 2-1

 

The No. 13 Boston University Terriers kicked off a home-and-away series against New Hampshire with a 2-1 road victory. Christina Vote and Maggie Hanzel scored goals in the First and Second Periods, respectively, before UNH scored a power-play goal in the Third. BU goaltender Callie Shanahan made 21 saves in the net.

The Hockey East-leading Terriers are 21-9-1 overall and 18-5-1 in conference play. They lead UConn by four points in the Hockey East standings.

Game Two of the series is tomorrow at 4:00 pm in the friendly confines of BU's Walter Brown Arena.

Alex Bregman No Longer Despicable

 

The Boston Red Sox have acquired righthanded hitter Alex Bregman from the Houston Astros and just like that, we no longer hate him (still hate the despicable Astros, though). The Sox signed Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal which includes deferrals and opt outs after the first and second years. Bregman turns 31 in March and is a two-time All-Star (2018 and 2019) with 191 homers over nine seasons with the Astros, including seven at Fenway. It is expected that he will probably play at second.

The Sox have improved their pitching in the offseason by signing a pair of lefthanded pitchers -  Garrett Crochet from the White Sox and Patrick Sandoval from the Angels. They also acquired righthanded pitcher Walker Buehler from the Dodgers and journeyman reliever Aroldis Chapman. Further, Red Sox pitchers Lucas Giolito, Garrett Whitlock, and Liam Hendriks will be coming back after injuries this season.

Meanwhile, Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta was acquired by the San Diego Padres. In return, the Sox will get a pick in the MLB draft later this summer. Best wishes, Nick!

This is the first baseball post here at Sweat Dissolves Water. Pitchers and catchers reported yesterday, and the first full-squad workout will be Monday. Preseason play starts on February 22nd, and the 2025 season opens with a four-game stand at the Texas Rangers beginning March 27.   

    

Celtics Beat Spurs, 116-103

 

Victor Wembanyama and company came up from San Antonio for a little visit to the Garden and were trounced by the Boston Celtics, 116-103. Tatum scored 32 points and snagged 14 rebounds, a double double. With both Brown and Holiday out, Porzingis stepped up and hit for 29, while Horford had 10 rebounds. What a luxury to have that kind of depth on your team.

The Celtics improve to 39-16 on the season but are still five games back from the Cavs in the East. Next, they play in Philadelphia against the 22-33 Sixers after the All-Star Weekend.   

BU TERRIERS WIN BEANPOT, 4-1!!!

 

The underdog, No. 9 ranked Boston University Terriers beat the national No. 1 Boston College Eagles, 4-1, and are the 2025 Beanpot Champions.

BC scored first and ended the first period leading 1-0. But BU regrouped, and responded with four unanswered goals in the second and third - even strength goals by Brandon Svoboda, Cole Hutson, and Cole Eiserman, and an open-net goal by Gavin McCarthy. BU goalie Mikhail Yegorov made a near-perfect 43 saves (.977). 

This is BU's 32nd Beanpot championship. In 297 overall meetings, BU leads the all-time series against BC, 140-136-21. The two schools have combined for 52 Beanpot titles, with BU leading all schools with its 32 titles. 

Friendly reminder that the BU women's hockey team beat BC on January 31.

Celtics Go to Miami, Beat the Heat, 103-85

 

No Jimmy Butler on the Heat side, but the Celtics would have won anyway.  Another big game for Tatum (33 points), a double double for Horford (16 points and 10 rebounds), scorching 5-for-8 three-point shooting by Hauser, and Porzingis back in the lineup. 

All eyes tonight, however, are on the Big Game up in Boston - the 72nd annual Beanpot Championship between BU and BC.

The Celtics are now 38-16 on the season. They head back home to the Garden and will play Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night.

Celtics Dominate MSG, Beat Knicks 131-104

 

The Celtics, not a team to lose two in a row, bounce back from their loss to the Dallas Mavs with a 131-104 thumping of the Knicks. Boston never trailed the entire game.

Jayson Tatum was in all-star form and scored 40 points, leading all teams. Luke Kornet, playing as a starter to fill in for Jrue Holiday, got a 14-point, 12-rebound double double, and Payton Pritchard scored 25 points off the bench, including a scorching 6-of-8 on three-point shots.

Boston takes a 2½-point lead over New York in the Atlantic Division, and are 5½ games back from Cleveland in the East. 

The Celtics are off to Miami for a Monday-night game against the Jimmy Butler-less Heat. 

Bruins Lose to Vegas, 4-3

In a now-familiar narrative, the Bruins lose but Brad Marchand scored a goal and David Pastrnak got an assist. Marchand reaches the 20-goal level for the 14th time in his career, and Pastrnak's assist, the 40th of the season, extends his point streak to 13 games with either a goal or an assist. 

Pastrnak now has 11 goals and 15 assists during his 13-game point streak. His 13-game streak ties his own 2019 streak, as well as 13-game streaks by current teammate Brad Marchand (2019 and 2020) and by Phil Esposito (1970, '72, '73, and '74), Johnny Bucyk ('71), Ray Bourque (1993), and Adam Oates (1994). The team record was set by Bronco Horvath at 22 games in 1959-60. 

With this latest loss, the Bruins fall to 27-24-6, sixth in the Atlantic Division and one point out of qualifying for a playoff Wild Card spot.

The Bruins' schedule resumes after the All-Star break with a game against the Anaheim Ducks (23-24-6) in the Garden.

BU Women Avenge UConn Loss with 4-1 Thumping of Providence

 

No keeping a good team down. The No. 14 BU Terriers bounced back from last night's disappointing loss to UConn and scored four 3rd-period goals against unranked Providence to get back in the win column. 

Trailing 1-0, Sydney Healey scored first with an even-strength goal and then ten minutes later she finished the 3rd period bloodshed with an open-net goal. In between, Maeve Carey scored the game-winning even-strength goal and Alex Law scored a short-handed goal during a Providence power play. Mari Pietersen was in the net today and made 36 saves (.973). 

With the win, the Terriers open their first-place Hockey East lead over UConn to four points. 

Next weekend, the Terriers will play a hone-and-away series against 14-14-1 New Hampshire, seventh in Hockey East (10-12-0).
