The No. 7 Northeastern Huskies, the first-place team in Hockey East, have won the last three women's Beanpots, the last two times by beating the unranked BU Terriers.
Not this year. Last night, the Terriers eliminated the Huskies in the first round in an overtime bout, winning the game by a final score of 2-1. BU freshman Lexie Bertelsen scored the first goal of the game early in the first, but the Huskies tied the score five minutes later and that was it for scoring in regulation. In the OT, Maeve Carey scored an overtime goal on a power play to eliminate the Huskies and give the Terriers the win before the largest crowd ever in BU's Walter Brown Arena.
Goalie Mari Pietersen made an impressive 35 saves for the Terriers and stopped the last 28 shots she faced.
BU will face Harvard in the Beanpot Championship Game in the TD Garden on Tuesday, January 20. The women beat those aristocratic nerdlings, 3-2, earlier this month in Belfast, and the men beat the Crimson, 4-1, on Monday night. Harvard may not be a hockey powerhouse, but I guess if you have to play for a Boston school for some reason, Harvard's as good a place as any. A win will give the Terriers their first Beanpot title since 2019, which was also the last time they faced Harvard in the finals.
Before that, though, the Terriers (7-11-3) have a Saturday night home game against Holy Cross (15-7-1).
