Fort Ross (72°00′N, 94°14′W) is an abandoned former trading post on Somerset Island, Canada. Founded in 1937, it was the last trading post established by the Hudson's Bay Company. Operational for only eleven years, it was abandoned in 1948 due to severe ice conditions in the surrounding waters. Situated at the eastern end of the Bellot Strait, it is close to the shore of the small Depot Bay. The nearest inhabited place is Taloyoak, 171 miles to the south; Ottawa, Canada's capitol city, is 1,900 miles to the south.
Ella Hibbert and the Yeva, since leaving Bylot Island, have sailed west through Lancaster Sound and then turned south into Prince Regent Inlet between Baffin and Somerset Islands down to the Gulf of Boothia. At the mouth of Bellot Strait, which separates Somerset Island to the north from the Boothia Peninsula to the south, they turned west and late last night pulled into Depot Bay next to old Fort Ross. Assuming Tamara and the Sardinia 2 are there with them, that's probably more people (two) in Fort Ross than in quite a while. What I'm trying to say is not a whole lot goes on in Fort Ross these days.
The AIS tracker on the Yeva shows the ship moving back and forth, north to south, in the bay. It's unclear at this point if this is due to tracking imprecision at those northern latitudes, tidal activity, scouting around to find the optimal anchor location, or polar bear avoidance.
