The No. 14-ranked Boston University men's hockey team crushed the University of Maine last night, 7-2. Playing in their home Agganis Arena, seven different Terriers scored a goal and all twelve forwards recorded a point.
BU scored three goals in the first 1:31 of the game alone. While fans were still settling in their seats, Tynan Lawrence scored a mere 29 seconds into the first period. Xavier Villeneuve made it 2-0 at the 1:00-minute mark and Ben Merrill gave the Terriers their third goal 31 seconds later. Pity the fan who arrived at the game late.
The Terriers' Victor Nörringer added another goal at the 4:49 mark to give BU a 4-0 lead. Moments later, the Black Bears hit their first goal to end the opening period, 4-1.
Niklas Aaram-Olsen and Brandon Svoboda both added goals in the second period for a 6-1 Terriers lead. In the opening minutes of the third, Conrad Fondrk found the back of the net on a 5-on-3 power play to give BU a 7-1 lead before Maine answered with a power-play goal of their own for the final 7-2 score.
The goals were collegiate firsts for Villeneuve, Nörringer, and Aaram-Olsen. Goaltender Mikhail Yegorov made 28 saves against 30 shots (.933).
The Terriers improve to 5-2-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in Hockey East, where their nine points leads the conference. They're trailed by Vermont (7 points), Providence (6) Merrimack (5), and UMass (3). BC and UConn struggle with only two points each.
The Black Bears are kind enough to hang around Boston for another night and will play the Terriers again at 6:00 pm.
