Lucas Giolito gets his second start for the Red Sox and earns his second loss. The script I had in mind for 2025 didn't go like this.
With their third straight loss (fifth of their last six games) the Red Sox (18-19) fall back below .500 again. Amazingly, they are still clinging to second place in the AL East, where right now the Yankees are the only team with a winning record. The last time the division had only one team above .500 was July 13, 2012, when Baltimore was the only team with a winning record.
Former Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi threw six innings for the Rangers and struck out seven. In all, Boston batters struck out a dozen times. Meanwhile, Giolito melted down in the fourth, giving up six runs. In his first start, I complained that Cora left him in the game too long. Now, it seems the problem is putting him on the mound at all.
Game 2 is Wednesday - Tanner Houck (0-2, 6.38) versus Tyler Mahle (3-1, 1.19). May god have mercy.
